The Republic of Niger is landlocked. It gained independence
from France in 1960. It is bounded by Nigeria to the south,
Lybia and Algeria to the north, Chad to the east, and Burkina
Faso and Benin to the west. Its climate is tropical, with
an average temperature of 840F or 290C. Its capital is Niamey.
Niger's total landmass is1,189,000 square kilometres. The
terrain contains: highlands, plateaux, mountains rising to
2000 metres at the peak, plains, lakes, rivers, forests, savannah
grassland and desert; and the country lies on part of the
River Niger basin.
The forests contain a vast wealth of wildlife.
The economy is agriculture based; along with mining. Its
agricultural products include: beans, sorghum, millet, cattle,
rice, sheep, camel, goats, and fish. Niger's mineral and resource
deposits include: large amounts of uranium, coal, salt, iron-ore,
tin, and cassiterite. Its industries include: textile, food,
and leather plants, and uranium, coal, iron, and salt mining.
