Daily news from Ghana, West Africa.

Under British colonial rule, it was called The Gold Coast, because of its immense gold deposits. It was named Ghana at independence in 1957, when it also became the first British African colony to gain independence. It is bordered by the Gulf of Guinea to the south, also bordering Cote dI'Voire (Ivory Coast) and Togo, and Burkina Faso to the north. Its capital is Accra.

Its total landmass is about 238,500 square kilometres. Ghana contains plateaux, mountains, rivers, plains, and dams; with the Volta basin plateau rising like a saucer to a height of over 600 metres, and Mount Afadjato rising to over 880 metres at its peak.
The dams supply electricity to the country.

Ghana has tropical climate, with an average temperature of 800F or 270C. The terrain is punctuated by dense tropical rain forests, savannah grassland, and scrub farming land. The forests contain valuable trees, which include: camwood, ebony, silk cotton, and mahogany, and wildlife.

The economy is based on agriculture and industry. Corn, rice, taros, yams, cassava, plantains, sorghum, millet, cattle, coffee, fruits, palm oil and kernel, rubber, copra, cotton, kola nuts, and limes, are farmed for domestic and export purposes.
Ghana is the world's leading cocoa producer for domestic and export purposes.

Its industries include: cement, paper, chemicals, textiles, vehicle, aluminium, petroleum, and food processing complexes. Its dams also supply electricity to Togo, and the Republic of Benin; whilst it imports crude oil from Lybia and Nigeria for its petroleum refineries.

Other mineral deposits in Ghana include: diamonds, and bauxite; gold and diamond mining complete an impressive array of industries in the country.
Gold is the principal export earner, closely followed by cocoa
