Daily news from Chad, West Africa.
Chad, which under colonial rule, was part of Equatorial Guinea,
gained its independence from France in 1960.
It occupies a large, landlocked, landmass of 1,284,000 square
kilometres. The northern part of the country is occupied by
the Sahara desert, culminating in the arid plains of the Sahel.
The granite terrain ascends ruggedly to the Tibesti mountains,
reaching up to 3,415 metres at the peak. The Sudan borders
the Chadian eastern plateaux. Lake
Chad straddles the southwest. N'Djamena is the capital, with
an average temperature of 820F or 280C.
Lake Chad has been inhabited since about 500 BC.
The economy is agriculture based; however, cotton makes up
the bulk of the export product, followed by meat and gum.
Other products include: gin, cassava, millet, yams, peanuts,
rice, corn, dates, pulses, and sweet potatoes. Cattle, sheep,
and goats are also farmed for domestic and export purposes.
Industries include: sugar and textile refineries, and cotton
gin. Gold, bauxite, uranium, and tungsten are some of the
mineral deposits of the Chad basin.
