As a French colony, Burkina Faso was called Upper Volta,
after the Volta River. Its economy was closely integrated
with France throughout its colonial period.
It attained independence in 1960. Ouagadougou is the capital.
Being landlocked, Burkina Faso is bounded by Ghana, Togo,
and Cote D'Ivoire to the south, Mali straddles the northwest,
whilst Niger and Benin border the east. It has a land area
of 274, 378 square kilometres covering a sloping plateau.
Its forests are wild life preserves: animals inhabiting the
preserves include;
lions, elephants, crocodiles, monkeys, hippopotamus, and antelope.
Its climate is tropical with an average rainfall of about
25 centimetres.
The economy is agriculture based, producing; corn, sheep,
goats, cattle, cotton, for domestic and export purposes. Meet
products - hides and skins are also exported.
Burkina Faso has deposits of gold, bauxite and manganese.
Its industries include; Gold mining, sugar refinery, flour,
rice, and textile mills, and cotton gins.
